*Students need to learn that Math is EVERYWHERE!! Whether they're working on an ELA assignment, a Science or Social Studies project, there's always Math involved somewhere. Just as Spelling should count in ALL subjects, Math can very simply be integrated into ANY lesson.*
FACT: Content is often taught in ISOLATION instead of INTEGRATION.
FACT: INTEGRATING skills and strategies in ALL content areas enables our students to RECALL and APPLY the skills they've acquired easily and effectively.
FACT: Students who excel in ALL academic areas are able to RECALL and APPLY skills through daily CONTENT AREA CONNECTIONS
FACT: MATH CONCEPTS present a constant challenge for MANY children (& adults!) for one simple reason: COMPREHENSION.
Writing in mathematics is as important as writing in any other subject area. Teaching children to EXPLAIN various concepts triggers their critical thinking skills, enabling them to become effective problem solvers. For example, when asked to explain WHY 2 x 3 = 6, a student should be able to DEMONSTRATE, ILLUSTRATE & EXPLAIN this concept. This also links mathematics to other subject areas such as ELA, Writing, Spelling & Art.
Research has shown that students learn more effectively when able to CONNECT learned concepts to other areas, therefore creating a common thread throughout the curriculum. This enables them to LEARN concepts, RECALL & APPLY them in any situation.
